FUNCTIONS – CHILD THEME
- Use Your Child Theme Functions.php
I know, I said not to use your theme’s functions.php file. However, this is a good option for certain changes.
This is probably best for code that applies directly to your theme (or the way something is displayed on the site), and not to a plugin like WooCommerce. This way, the custom code is gone when your theme is gone as it won’t be needed any longer. However, it should still be added to a child theme, and not the parent, so it’s upgrade-safe.
If there’s absolutely no way for you to use the first two solutions for plugin or WordPress-specific custom code (which I really don’t believe!), you can use the child theme functions.php rather than your parent theme’s functions.php file. We have instructions on creating a child theme and child functions.php in our article on WooCommerce How To’s.
If you do add code to your functions.php, be sure to look for closing PHP tags (they look like: ?>). If your theme file ends in one of these, you need to make sure you put custom code above it.
To get you started, here’s a child theme template that includes a functions.php file. Download and unzip this template, then change the style.css file as per the instructions in your text editor (you’ll probably have to right-click and select “Open with” to use the right program). You’ll need to change the template name and import URL to reflect your parent theme’s information.

OVERALL INFO
There are certain features in WordPress that you must add theme support for for your theme to be able to take advantage of them. These are:
- Post formats – tumblr-like formats such as standard, video, quote and aside
- Post thumbnails – also known as featured images. If you want to display these in your theme you’ll also have to add the code to output them to your template files, but they won’t be available in the admin screens unless you add theme support for them
- A custom background – lets you (or others using your theme) customize the background image and colors via the customizer
- A custom header – which works in a similar way to the custom background
- Automatic feed links – for RSS feeds
- HTML5 – for search forms, comments, gallery etc. This doesn’t affect your ability to code your theme using HTML5, but relates to code generated by WordPress
- Title tag – this lets you add a title tag in the
<head>
of your pages for SEO and accessibility purposes. You won’t need this if you’ve got an SEO plugin doing this for you
So to add theme support for post formats, for example, you use the add_theme_support() function in your functions file:
add_theme_support( ‘post-formats’ );
Some of the features you add theme support for have additional parameters; for example, you can specify the post formats you want to use when adding support for them:
add_theme_support( ‘post-formats’, array( ‘aside’, ‘quote’ ) );
And for featured images, you can specify which post types you want to add support for them to:
add_theme_support( ‘post-thumbnails’, array( ‘post’, ‘page’ ) );
But none of this will work unless you place your code inside a function that you then attach to the correct hook, which is the after_setup_theme action hook. You can add all of your add_theme_support() functions inside one larger function that you then hook to after_setup_theme. So if you want to add theme support for post thumbnails, post formats, HTML5 and automatic feed links, you add this to your functions file:
/**********************************************************************************
wpmu_theme_support – adds theme support for post formats, post thumbnails, HTML5 and automatic feed links
**********************************************************************************/
function wpmu_theme_support() {
/* post formats */
add_theme_support( ‘post-formats’, array( ‘aside’, ‘quote’ ) );
/* post thumbnails */
add_theme_support( ‘post-thumbnails’, array( ‘post’, ‘page’ ) );
/* HTML5 */
add_theme_support( ‘html5’ );
/* automatic feed links */
add_theme_support( ‘automatic-feed-links’ );
}
add_action( ‘after_setup_theme’, ‘wpmu_theme_support’ );
Note that I’ve added commented out text above each item that I’ve added theme support for, so if I or anyone else comes back to the file later on, it will be easy to see what’s going on.

A WINDOW INTO OUR WORLD
By no means are we suggesting any of these disallowed plugins are “bad” plugins. Some of them, like related posts plugins, can be great for content discoverability. As your managed WordPress host however, our primary concern is to provide the fastest and most secure WordPress hosting experience we can. These plugins have proven that they will negatively impact performance or security on our platform and we’ve made the decision to prevent their use.
As for insecure plugins, we try to work with the plugin developer to have them corrected. During that time the plugin may temporarily be added to our disallowed list and we’ll happily allow it again once the issue has been addressed.
If you have any questions about these disallowed plugins, or feel a recent update to a plugin has been put forth to correct the issue we’ve banned it for, please contact our Support team.
